Many private investigations firms operate on the same payment systems typically utilized by legal representation commonly known as a retainer.  A retainer is an advance payment for services to be provided at a future time. A retainer ensures that your private investigator is paid for the services they provide and it also allows you to budget in advance for the cost of an investigation. Once the services are provided, their cost is deducted from the retainer and the client maintains a credit memo with the company. Typically firms will refund any portion of the retainer remaining once the investigation is complete.

While the use of retainers is commonplace in the private investigations industry it is important to ask a private investigator their policy regarding payment. Sample question to ask an investigator include:

Do they require a retainer?

What is the typical retainer for this type of investigation?

What happens to the funds left in my retainer at the conclusion of the investigation?
